About this Blog
The intent of the authors of this blog is to provide search and rescue responders in North America with information about the following:
- New Technology - GPS devices, handheld computers and programs, radios, and other electronic devices
- New Gear - packs, trekking poles, tents, sleeping bags and pads, as well as SAR oriented equipment.
- Clothing - technical outerwear with an eye to visibility and durability.
- Rediscovering Older Gear - equipment that has been around for a while and is getting a renewed interest in the SAR community.
- Creative Uses for Equipment - sometimes gear is most useful for us when it is repurposed.
About the Authors:
Rob Brewer
Rob showed up to his first SAR meeting in June of 1998 not knowing what he was getting himself into. Little did he know that nearly ten years later he would still be involved. His friends suspected he would stick around, but didn’t tell him as they didn’t want to scare him off. Rob served as both training officer and president of Spokane Regional Search and Rescue before taking some time to become a SARTECH II evaluator and then coordinator (now lead evaluator) with the National Association for Search and Rescue (NASAR.) When he returned to the local SAR scene, he joined the Spokane Mountaineers Search and Rescue team. He is serving as the training officer for this unit and the vice-chair for the Spokane County SAR Council through the end of 2007.
Rob’s SAR interests have evolved over the years and he is now most interested in pursuing accreditation with the Mountain Rescue Association for his team as well as growing a NASAR presence in the Pacific Northwest. His interest in gear, technology, and other outdoor toys is an aspect of his life that his wife has grown to tolerate, as long as it doesn’t adversely impact their financial stability. Please remind him of that last bit.
Lorna Doone Brewer
Lorna is an accomplished writer and blogger and has encouraged Rob to work on this project for some time. She is glad he finally got off his you-know-what and started this thing. Lorna will probably guest-post from time to time as well as provide a different perspective on things.
